Supervised visits can be a challenging experience for parents and children, particularly after a prolonged separation. In a recent instruction, a seven-year-old child prepares to reunite with their parent after a year apart. The child is understandably nervous, excited, and anxious. The social worker’s (ISW) role is not just pivotal, but crucial in ensuring that this reunion is not only safe and appropriate but also a positive and reassuring experience for all parties.

Our ISWs will have an initial telephone call with parents before all supervised visits. They exhibit a warm and welcoming demeanour, which sets the tone for when the family arrives. The ISW explains the process to the parents, also allowing them to ask any questions to relieve any anxieties or worries they may have. In some circumstances, we briefly meet with the children, ensuring the child understands what to expect. We emphasise that the meeting will be in a safe environment, with activities planned to make the time enjoyable. This approach helps to alleviate the child’s fears and builds a sense of trust and security.

The ISW also reassures the parents, acknowledging their emotions and concerns. They provide clear guidelines and expectations for supervised visits ensuring that both parents understand the importance of maintaining a positive atmosphere. The ISW’s empathetic and supportive nature helps to calm any anxieties, allowing the absent parent to focus on reconnecting with their child. The ISW supports the parent in creating a structured yet flexible environment conducive to a successful reunion by being child-focused, engaging, and nurturing throughout the visit (e.g. showing praise, care, and affection).

As the supervised contact progresses, the ISW remains attentive and responsive to the needs of both the child and the parent. They play a key role in facilitating engaging activities that encourage interaction and bonding, such as games, arts and crafts, or playing in the park. The ISW’s presence provides a sense of stability and comfort, ensuring that the experience is not only safe but also enjoyable. By the end of the session, the child feels more at ease, and the parent is reassured that their relationship with their child can be nurtured and strengthened in a supportive environment. This positive experience for the child, lays the foundation for future interactions, fostering hope and confidence in the family’s journey forward.
